This week has been a whirl wind. I had my first ever opening night of my “Water” exhibit and then my image “Plenty of fish in the Sea” was recognized in a local Artworks exhibit and was selected as the third place winning image amongst some outstanding pieces of art. I have felt honoured and privileged for these opportunities. Today, I was looking back on the week and decided to try to capture my feelings in an image. For so many, work is simply that, work. Something that you do day in and day out to put food on the table, clothes on your back and a roof over your head. There is no passion. There is no creativity. I am fortunate to have been given a second chance. After spending many years working as an Occupational Therapist I decided to take a chance, spread my wings and see if I could fly. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, nor was I confident in the path that I had chosen. I had spent so much time and energy going to school and working that I felt like a failure for walking away from a professional career. It took some time and some serious honest reflection, but I truly believe it was the best decision I could have ever made.
For this image, I decided that I would use butterflies to symbolize the changes in life, the risks, the opportunities and the successes. Transitioning from a life of stability and security (cocoon) into a butterfly embracing life and all that it offers. Taking chances. Living passionately. I used the book as a way to symbolize telling of the story of my journey. My story isn’t unique, but I do hope that it inspires others to dig deep inside themselves and listen to their heart and pursue what they love with every fibre of their being.
