Last week on recycling day it was so windy and all the recyclables were scattered throughout the neighbourhood. Then it snowed and covered up most of it. While we were in Dublin, my son wanted to go to see all things Connor McGregor. We visited the Black Forge pub to see what all the hype was about hoping we might actually see Connor. While we were in London we stumbled upon the Rolling Stones flagship store….it was such a great interactive experience and I couldn’t resist buying a t shirt or two 😉. To all my artist friends out there, this message is for you

Not everyone is going to love your art. And that’s ok. I used to take it as a personal rejection. After all as artists we put our heart and soul into our craft and when someone doesn’t like the end result it can feel very personal. I love this quote from the book Art and fear…”but while others reactions need not cause problems for the artist, they usually do. The problems arise when we confuse others priorities with our own.” As an artist you learn lessons over and over again and wanting to be understood is a basic need of all humans…. Creating art just to please others is limiting and so stifling…. Been there done that…. Being true to yourself although difficult at times really is what’s it’s all about. The right people will make connections to your art and just because they haven’t found you yet doesn’t dismiss your status as artist…all that really matters is whether or not you are making progress in your art and thoroughly enjoying the process. The right audience will come along. Sometimes though they have their own timeline. Enjoy the journey

Robert Frost said, “Two roads diverged in a wood and I - I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” When have you taken the road less traveled in your life? For me, I started on an unconventional path when I began my adult life. I went to university, got two degrees and worked as an occupational therapist. But it didn’t feel right no matter how hard I willed it to. My inner voice said that this is not your path and I quit. But I had no plan. Two kids, a mortgage and student loans and no plan. Doubters told me I should stay in my stable career, but I needed something else. So instead of giving up, I put one foot in front of the other and walked the path of uncertainty anyway. Now, many years later, I’m so grateful I took a chance on the road less traveled. It’s not always easy but like Robert Frost said, it really has made all the difference! I felt like letting go today and seeing where my digital pencil would take me. Strokes were loose and carefree. With everything going on in the world I was feeling down. I have to admit I have been feeling stuck. So today was just about letting go. Not worrying about the outcome. Not striving for perfection or preconceived notions of what the result should be.
